VENICE BEACH: A haven for artists, writers, musicians, architects.
Venice Beach has a long held and colorful reputation for being a haven for artists, writers, musicians, architects and youthful trend setters and style makers. In its beginning in 1905, when tobacco tycoon Abbott Kinney set out to recreate a resort and amusement center to rival any other on the west coast, he set his sights on it’s namesake in Italy. He built a series of canals, which were to become the signature of the neighborhood, and remain to this day the site for some of the most interesting and eclectic mix of architecture in Los Angeles, reflecting the creativity and style of its residents. Many of the canals were filled in during a transformation during the depression, but the ones that remain today, 6 in total, are home to those who seek quiet privacy, away from grandiose opulence, offered by the pedestrian-only paths that lead to their homes, both impressively grand and stylishly bohemian.
In addition to the canals, Kinney built a lively, bustling amusement pier, thought to be the best on the west coast in its time. Although the amusement park hasn’t survived, the town still bears the carnival feeling and exuberant energy of it’s past. The Venice Boardwalk, which includes the legendary Muscle Beach, is a vibrant feast for the senses; a walk along the ocean front, full of shops, street performers and vendors, and cafes…perfect for some of the most entertaining people watching in town. Film and television crews are often seen here, taking advantage of the visually rich Venice scene as a backdrop.
Art has been a community passion in Venice for generations. Initially drawn to the area after the depression to take advantage of the low rents and laid back lifestyle, artists writers, and musicians flocked Venice. The early Beat Generation poets of the 1950’s created an atmosphere of the ultimate hip and happening community, which continued to attract the likes of Jim Morrison in the 60’s, and still beckons to trendy and stylish actors, like Julia Roberts, Dennis Hopper, Angelica Huston… and innovative businesses in animation, web design and architecture.
The Venice Art Walk is an annual, highly attended and anticipated event. It features access to dozens of art studios, pop up art galleries and a silent auction, which benefits the Venice Family Clinic, the largest free clinic in the country…a point of pride in the community. Also a favorite yearly event is the Venice Canals Boat Parade, full of brightly decorated boats, floating past festive parties gathered along the banks. The Venice Skate Park, situated on the beach, is one of the most popular and finest of its kind.
